A Sedgefield motorbiker died in the Outeniqua Pass during what would have been his usual Sunday outing with a group of motorcycling friends, George Herald reports.

The man lost control of his BMW GS motor bike and is believed to have had a blackout. His girlfriend, who was a pillion rider (sitting on the back), was taken to hospital with light injuries.

According to longtime friend Eddie Trauschweizer he became worried when he looked around and did not see his friend. Upon turning back he found his friend next to the road in the cement area after he had careened over a grassy verge.

The man had undergone a medical procedure three weeks ago and been suffering from heart problems for three years.

“We just want to say that this was not a speed accident and think it is more likely that he had a blackout. He was a fun-loving guy who enjoyed life and was on his way home from having a pizza up in Waboomskraal when the accident happened just after the turn-off to the Montagu Pass.”

The accident took place at about noon.
