Mom throws handbag at Midrand hijackers to save child
A gang of armed men surrounded the woman’s vehicle as she stopped in a driveway in Waterfall on Sunday.
A mother and her child were lucky to escape an attempted hijacking unharmed after a gang of hijackers surrounded her vehicle in broad daylight on Sunday (8 April) in Waterfall, Midrand, Highway Mail reports.
Blue Security’s community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios, said the woman arrived at a friend’s property in Inanda Road at about 1.10pm, and was subsequently held up by the gang.

“The suspects, armed with firearms, stood on either side of her vehicle and told her to get out of the car,” Mathios said.
“Concerned about her child, who was sitting in a car seat in the back of the vehicle, she threw her handbag out of the window. The motion caused the vehicle to roll and hit into a gate post, jamming it between some rocks,” Mathios said.
“The suspects quickly realised that it was going to be a bad idea to try and steal the vehicle and grabbed the handbag and ran to their getaway vehicle, a white BMW,” Mathios said.
“The suspects jumped into the vehicle and fled the scene.”
Hillcrest SAPS were at the scene of the crime.
