“At this stage I cannot speculate as to why the power has gone out but we are trying to find out what has caused the outage. It’s been reported as widespread at this stage,” he said.
Reports have suggested that the cause of the outage is due to a substation failure in the Mariannhill area. There have also been unconfirmed reports that a transformer has blown at the Klaarwater high voltage transmission substation supplying the eThekwini region.
Attempts to get hold of City spokesperson Tozi Mthetwa have been unsuccessful.
Other areas affected include Queensburgh and uMhlanga.
Power is being restored in stages. La Lucia, Sydenham, Glenhills, Glen Anil and North Beach have had their power restored.
