Massive boost for rhino conservation

The uBhejane Xtreme MTB riders raised R395k for rhino conservation.

There was great anticipation among guests attending the official cheque presentation of the monies raised by the 2017 uBhejane Xtreme MTB Challenge for rhino conservation.

A total of R395 000 was raised and donated to the event’s official beneficiary, Project Rhino KZN, at the presentation event at Makaranga Garden Lodge in Hillcrest, KwaZulu-Natal, Zululand Observer reports.

The funds will be used for Project Rhino’s various rhino protection programmes. These include the maintenance of the aerial support of the Zululand Anti-Poaching Wing (ZAP-Wing) to 26 game reserves in northern KZN, providing urgently needed anti-poaching training and other resources to field rangers and game reserves, and community-based education and awareness initiatives.

Last year’s ride was one of the toughest with only one person riding into the Hilltop Resort in the Hluhluwe Game Reserve.

The ride has shown increased support from sponsors and riders, growing from R250 000 being raised over the first two years, R254 000 in 2016 and now R395 000.
