Capitec Bank at Sundumbili in Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal, was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money on Monday, North Coast Courier reports.

A 39-year-old cash-in-transit guard was held at gunpoint when he was entering the bank to collect money, according to a witness.

He was approached by a man who demanded he lock the main door behind him.

He then disarmed the guard and went with him to the safe and demanded he open it.

Ilembe cluster police spokesperson Sibusiso Khuzwayo said the man took eight bags of money.

“He loaded them into a big bag. He further demanded the guard open the vault and the guard told him that he had no key or combination for it.”

The man fled on foot and fired several shots to scare off pursuers.

The bank manager declined to comment.
