Fallen firefighters commemorated at Roodepoort ceremony

On 16 May during a solemn ceremony, fallen firefighters, present and past, were commemorated at Florida Park Fire Station (Fire Station 20), Roodepoort Record reports.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were the Acting Executive Head of the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (Jems) Mhlengi Makhubalo, and the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, councillor Michael Sun.

Jems spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi pensively observes a minute of silence for the fallen firefighters.

The event kicked of with a minute of silence before a parade was held. When Sun and other dignitaries arrived, the national anthem was sung and the flags hoisted. This was followed by a short moment of reflection by Chief Chaplin Ngwenya.

The rest of the programme included a candle lighting ceremony, a poetry reading, the ringing of the Fireman’s Bell and the keynote address, which was delivered by councillor Sun.
