DA to table motion of no confidence in Premier Makhura for Esidimeni deaths

The DA said the Gauteng government did not heed warnings that a tragedy of 'epic proportions' was unfolding.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will table a motion of no confidence against Premier David Makhura in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature on May 15 in a bid to hold him accountable for the 144 Life Esidimeni patients who suffered cruel and unnatural deaths, Benoni City Times reports.

The DA said the Gauteng government did not heed warnings that a tragedy of “epic proportions was unfolding”.

DA shadow MEC for health Jack Bloom’s relentless digging and probing uncovered the extent of the atrocities being committed against the 1 562 Life Esidimeni patients.

According to DA Gauteng provincial leader John Moodey, Makhura refused to see and hear, even when presented with overwhelming evidence, that a human disaster was occurring.

“It cannot be business as usual for the premier who is ultimately responsible for a gross miscarriage of leadership by his provincial government,” said Moodey.

He added that Makhura has a core mandate to ensure that under his watch services are delivered that will enhance the wellbeing of all the province’s residents, which includes the mentally ill.

“As the custodian of Gauteng’s 14.3 million residents, avoidable deaths on this scale is reason enough for Premier Makhura to vacate his position,” said Moodey.
