The Democratic Alliance in Ekurhuleni is concerned with unaccounted for firearms within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD).
The DA member of the Community Safety Oversight Committee in Ekurhuleni, Clr Jaco Terblanche, said through questions posed to the MMC for Community Safety, Clr Vivienne Chauke, it emerged that 14 firearms were lost by the EMPD at a financial cost of R161 000.
“This figure is for the past three calendar years,” Terblanche added.
“In addition, the MMC could not place any accountability on any individual(s), which is indicative of her lack of control within her department. What is alarming is that it is possible that these weapons are being used for criminal activities within the metro,” Terblanche said in a statement.
“The DA calls on the police to conduct a comprehensive audit on firearms within the EMPD, as we highly doubt the accuracy of the information provided by Clr Chauke.”
