Police in Ekurhuleni responded to a crime scene on Saturday morning where a failed cash-in-transit-heist took place on Modderfontein Road.
According to reports, four men armed with AK-47s, travelling in a silver Audi, tried to ambush a Fidelity truck, bombing it about three times and shooting at it several times, reports Kempton Express.
Sebenza SAPS spokesperson Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, who was at the scene, said the truck was chased from Esther Park.
“The men had been trying to stop the truck and chased it all the way from Esther Park. Along the way they were firing shots at it, but because the truck is bulletproof, did not succeed in stopping it. Eventually they started shooting at the wheels to stop the truck,” Tsotsotso explains.
The truck eventually came to a standstill on the P91 at the Tembisa/Zuurfontein Road turn-off.
“The armed men then tried bombing the truck about three times without success. They eventually fled the scene.”
Tsotsotso says about 10 or 11 cartridges were found at the scene.
Fortunately the security guards transporting the money were not hurt and the money was not stolen.
