The theft came just as it appeared that cable theft was on the wane in the area.
Multiple social media users asked what the City was doing to address the problem.
One of them, Danie Botha, asked:

Tshwane utility services and infrastructure MMC Darryl Moss responded that the City was working on upgrading their security services.
“The city expects to award the tender for watchman [security guard] services any time now,” said Moss.
“The roll-out of the new technology-based security system should also start by the end of the month.”
Many social media users slammed the metro for failing to deal with the problem sooner.
Funniest thing is that it happens either Tuesday at 02:00 or Sunday at 02:00 every second week.

We all know it will be restored around 22:00. Cable theft every damn week. What are you doing about this @Our_DA & you @CityTshwane? This is unacceptable.

Your excuse of cable theft every week is tiring. What is the City doing to stop this. I think you enjoy paying for cable stollen than rehiring those securities @SollyMsimanga fired. @TshwaneEff @GautengANC @DrZweliMkhize

The city only response to sweetheart comments. You tell them the truth they hibernate, that’s how sad things are. Cable theft that happens only on Tuesdays and Sundays only. Either the thieves are that strategic or we just being played.

Moss said the implementation of the new technology-based security would see a significant decrease in cable theft and power outages.
