Police have recovered a firearm that is alleged to belong to the men who shot a policeman and a bystander in Pomona on Tuesday night.
According to the police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali, the AK-47 was found at the crime scene on Wednesday when police continued with their investigations, Kempton Express reported.
“Police visited the crime scene at the corner of Maple and Constantia streets in Pomona searching for further clues. They found an AK-47 allegedly left by the suspects after the shootout. The firearm will be sent to the ballistics unit for further investigations,” Mtshali explained.
On Tuesday evening at about 7.15pm, a police officer and a woman, the bystander, were injured during a shootout between police and five men.
According to Mtshali, the police officer is still recovering in hospital while the woman, who was luckily only grazed on the head by a bullet, was not hospitalised.
“Due to her minor injuries, she was just treated at the scene and received further treatment at the hospital but she was not admitted.”
One suspect in his late 30s has since been arrested. Police hope the other suspects will be brought to book soon.
The station commander of Kempton Park, Brigadier Samuel Maredi, wishes the civilian and the police officer a speedy recovery and commends the police officers who responded to the backup requested by the officer, which resulted in the arrest of one suspect.
