Afropunk Johannesburg announces Nandi Madida as host of Afropunk Festival

Constitutional Hill is ready to welcome Afropunk for the first time in Africa.

With a little less than a month to go until Afropunk hits African soil for the very first time, Afropunk Joburg has announced Nandi Madida as the official host for the festival, City Buzz reports.

Come 30 and 31 December at Johannesburg’s Constitutional Hill, the singer and presenter will take to the stage in front of thousands of festival-goers celebrating art, music, fashion and culture.

Madida said: “I am particularly ecstatic and honoured to be hosting Afropunk because it is not only a festival but a movement. A movement that I have followed for many years, one that encouraged me to go out there and be unashamedly myself in a world that is constantly trying to make us conform to certain social norms.

“And now it’s happening in the centre of all things ‘Afro’ – that is insane!”

One of Afropunk’s strongest attributes to the public is that it has long been known as an advocate for cultural change and serving its primary audience.

So even though its popularity has risen greatly, the festival continues an affordable paid- and earned-ticket programme. The initiative called Afropunk (AP) Army is part of the Afropunk Global Initiative and gives fans the opportunity to gain admittance to the iconic festival in exchange for volunteer and community service.

Like many of those interested in attending this event, Madida shared the same sentiment that Africa was the cradle of so many things that are bold, fierce and alternative, from artists, to the people coming to watch, to the legacy Afropunk has created.

“I honestly feel like I’m home, and I can’t wait to interact with my people. It’s going to be epic! I am beyond humbled to be a part of the very first Afropunk in South Africa as an emcee. Let us make history and be a part of an incredible legacy.”
