Failed project in Boksburg allegedly wastes R6m in taxpayer money

The Ekurhuleni mayor said the metro would construct a specialised services precinct, but failed to elaborate on the project being a disaster.

A source has revealed to Boksburg Advertiser that R6 million in taxpayers’ money has allegedly been wasted on an unfinished project in Boksburg by the Ekurhuleni municipality.

During the delivery of his state of the city address at the Germiston Council Chambers last month, Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina said the metro would construct a specialised services precinct in Boksburg.

R6-million in taxpayers’ money had allegedly been wasted on this unfinished project to construct an EMPD precinct in Boksburg.

The councillor said the delays on the construction as well as the damages mean the project will cost taxpayers much more than it should have.

The mayor, however, did little to inform the public that the construction of the precinct in question has already proven to be a failed project, as the company appointed to carry out the job left the site almost a year ago.

The ward councillor expressed his concerns about the building material left lying around the unsecured site, at the mercy of thieves and vandals.

According to a well-placed source, construction works on the project commenced almost two years ago, and the contractor abandoned the site after it apparently failed to deliver as required – almost a year after it commenced construction works.

Details to follow as more information becomes available.
