Family of tragic N4 accident that claimed five lives identified

One of the five victims who passed away in yesterday’s accident on the N4 was the owener of GMC Debt Solutions in Lydenburg.


Gretli Steyn was travelling with her husband, Piet Steyn (47) and their two children, Marli (18) and Pieter (10) at the time of the accident, reports the Middelburg Observer.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver of an Isuzu double cab lost control of his vehicle in the rain and then veered into oncoming traffic. Authorities have confirmed that the Isuzu was carrying five occupants, including a four-month-old baby.

The grizzly crash occurred at around 4pm on Sunday on the N4 between the Samora Machel and Hendrina off-ramps near Middelburg, Mpumalanga.

The accident scene resulted in heavy traffic delays where motorists reportedly sat for over an hour.

The driver, who was coming from Malelane, had stopped to pick up two hitchhikers. The driver, one unknown female and one unknown male both died upon impact. A four-month-old baby was rushed to Life Midmed Hospital by bystanders but later passed away. The baby’s mother remains hospitalised.

According to reports, the Steyn family have sustained serious injuries. However, they are in a noncritical condition.
