UPDATE: Shooting in Carlswald in Midrand, motorists advised to avoid the area

Four suspects have been arrested for hijacking, attempted robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms.


Provincial police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said the suspects robbed a cellphone shop of an undisclosed amount of money at Carlswald Lifestyle Shopping Centre in Midrand before 11am,  Midrand Reporter reports.

The suspects had also hijacked a vehicle from a woman before the robbery.

“The suspects tried to leave, but police had already arrived at the scene. Shooting ensued as police, and suspects exchanged fire. Police chased and arrested the suspects. Investigations are under way,” said Makhubela.

Two firearms were recovered and the hijacked vehicle.

Other reports from the scene allege one of the suspects was earlier seen walking around suspiciously near the shop, and when a security guard approached him he pointed a firearm at the guard.

Community members are urged to stay away from the intersection. It has been reported a cellphone shop has been robbed, and it is believed that four suspects, who were on the run, have been arrested.

Firearms have been confiscated but this information is yet to be verified by the police.
