High risk of load shedding on Thursday

Power utility Eskom announced on Thursday that though load shedding was not implemented on Wednesday, the risk of it being implemented today remains high “as the system is still tight and vulnerable”.

“Load shedding will only be implemented if absolutely necessary,” Eskom said in a statement.

The power utility encouraged residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly and for geysers to be switched off as well as non-essential lighting and electricity appliances.

“Customers are advised to keep checking their load shedding schedules on the Eskom or municipal website,” the statement reads.

The announcement comes as the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) is expected to make an announcement on the tariff increases for Eskom.

Prices for electricity could rise by 21% as of next month if Nersa grants Eskom the full price increase it has requested.
