While speaking about rumours that he had run away from an ANC camp in Zambia, Maphatose recounted the story of how his arm was shot off.
He had lost a lot of blood, lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital, where his arm was amputated.
“They were chasing us thinking that we are rebels, only to find that we are not. I was in front, and other comrades were following behind me. So they shot me … in fact, I was supposed to be dead. Fortunately, God is there.
“I was shot in the hand, but they ceased fire after realising that we were not rebels. That is why I was taken to Mulago camp and a hospital in Uganda, and after that I was repatriated back to South Africa. I went back to the camps and stayed there until the ANC repatriated us back, then we went to Luthuli House to explain ourselves,” he said.
