Lindiwe Sisulu ‘ready’ to run for ANC presidency

Sisulu has thrown her hat into the ring and clarified her stance on leading the ruling party.

According to The Sowetan, the human settlements minister is ready to be nominated into the top structure of the ANC, and is set to go up against Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe.

“Should more branches see me fit to ascend to the ANC’s top job, I will avail myself.”

“But at the same time branches must work out whether the person they want is the best person for that job. My displeasure is that the ANC allowed the leadership succession debate to have names attached to it before the policy conference while we don’t even know what we are looking for.

“Now it appears we tailored our policies to suit the names that have been chosen, and that is very wrong,” said Sisulu.

She also cautioned Zuma against alienating ANC veterans.

This is not the first time Sisulu has spoken out. In May, she said the ANC had hit rock bottom after Zuma was booed and prevented from speaking at a May Day rally hosted by Cosatu in Bloemfontein.

“It cannot get worse than this. We really are almost rock bottom. We can only go up now‚” she said at the time.

Sisulu was also named as one of the several leaders who had received death threats for vocally opposing Zuma in meetings. She allegedly escaped two assassination attempts, with an insider saying she had been advised about the assassination threats by “those in the security establishment”, which was partly why she was “keeping a low profile when it comes to issues of succession”.

During internal meetings, Sisulu is, however, reportedly unafraid to “take the president to task” and confronted him regarding the Cabinet reshuffle during the national working committe (NWC) meeting.
