July could bring with it yet another petrol price hike

Motorists are undoubtedly feeling the pinch after the petrol price increased on Wednesday by 82 cents a litre.

If things remain as they are with the rand/dollar exchange rate‚ South Africa could be hit by another fuel price hike next month, Ladysmith Gazette reports.

This is the view of Layton Beard‚ spokesperson of the Automobile Association of SA (AA)‚ who emphasised that this warning is still speculative.

On Wednesday, June 6, the retail price of petrol shot up‚ pushing the petrol price to above R15 a litre; the third consecutive fuel hike this year.

Diesel now costs 87 cents more and paraffin is up by R1.09 a litre. The price of LP Gas has increased by R1.38 per kilogramme. The increases have been attributed to the rise in oil prices and a weaker rand.

Here’s to hoping that this speculative view remains just that, and that consumers and motorists have some reprieve before the next fuel hike.
