Job Mokgoro to tender his resignation as North West premier

Following a few days of uncertainty regarding his position, North West Premier Job Mokgoro has announced that he will finally tender his resignation letter.

This after Mokgoro met with President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday to discuss his way forward.

“Yesterday I met with the president and as I committed in the past few days, this morning I will be submitting a letter of my resignation to the speaker of the North West legislature as premier,” he said during a media briefing on Thursday.

Mokgoro has been at loggerheads with the ANC’s interim provincial committee (IPC) for some time and has been accused of undermining its renewal agenda and efforts to restore stability in the North West.

He was appointed the premier of the North West in 2018 to replace former ANC provincial chair, Supra Mahumapelo.

He will be replaced by Bushy Maape as the new premier-elect of the province.

Suspension

In December, the IPC suspended Mokgoro’s ANC membership along with five others for allegedly voting for an ANC candidate who was supported by the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the North West legislature.

This was in defiance of the IPC’s instructions, after the ANC provincial caucus had suggested a different candidate and the voting process was conducted via secret ballot.

IPC coordinator Hlomane Chauke previously indicated that Mokgoro would still face disciplinary action for not carrying out the ANC’s mandate.
