Chief of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) David Tembe has confirmed that an off-duty JMPD officer was involved in a motor accident on Sunday night that resulted in the deaths of three people. Two others were injured.
Tembe also confirmed the officer, who is alleged to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, has been arrested.
The officer, whose identity remains unknown, has been suspended with immediate effect, and is currently detained at the Lenasia police station.
He is expected to appear in court on Tuesday, according to Tembe.
