Jackson Mthembu supports Ramapahosa for ANC president

ANC parliamentary chief whip Jackson Mthembu has nailed his colours to the mast.

He does not support Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma’s bid to become the first female president of the party and of the country. Instead, he strongly believes Cyril Ramaphosa is the man for the top job, telling Fin24 that ANC tradition should be followed.

“The ANC created the position of deputy president precisely so that you have a person who is ready to take over should anything happen to the president.

“As an ANC member, I put such a person to be deputy because I was preparing that person to be president – case closed,” he said.

Mthembu came out in opposition to Zuma last year, telling him that he and the entire ANC national executive committee (including Mthembu) should resign for failing to clinch the hotly contested metros of Johannesburg, Nelson Mandela Bay and Pretoria.

“Never in my wildest dreams, or never in any of my nightmares, did I dream that we can lose Tshwane, we can lose Johannesburg,” said Mthembu.

Ramaphosa has the support of Cosatu while Dalmini-Zuma is being backed by the Women’s League and the ‘Premier League’ that consists of the premiers of Mpumalanga, Free State and North West.
