It’s far from over at Overvaal

A petrol bomb was thrown at a police van outside Hoërskool Overvaal yesterday.

Protesters threw a petrol bomb at a police van outside Hoërskool Overvaal yesterday as tensions continue to simmer outside the school between parents and members of the ANC and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The protesters are demonstrating about the decision by the 2016 When the report titled State of Capture by Thuli Madonsela recommended a judicial commission of inquiry be instituted into state capture High Court in Pretoria to overrule a decision by the Gauteng education department to force the Afrikaans-medium school to admit 55 English-speaking pupils.

The department has condemned the actions of the ANC and EFF. The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has been asked to facilitate talks to end the tension between the school’s parents and protesters.

The SAHRC has assured parents their children are safe. Protesters remained adamant that the rejection of 55 pupils by the school was blatant racism and have vowed to continue their actions.
Some even provoked police, asking them to shoot them. The 55 pupils have been sent to an alternative school – the nearby Riverside High School.
