Ipid recommends Phahlane’s suspension, MPs hear

The Ipid officials told MPs the acting top cop should be put on leave or suspended.

Police watchdog Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has recommended the suspension of acting national police commissioner General Khomotso Phahlane in a bid to prevent him from interfering in the organisation’s investigations.

Ipid directors, including the organisation’s head, Robert McBride, on Tuesday morning appeared before parliament’s police portfolio committee, where they briefed MPs on alleged interference by Phahlane and a North West police investigating team in internal probes, News24 reported.

City Press reported at the weekend, officials from the Ipid and the National Prosecuting Authority wanted to consolidate all the charges against Phahlane before the matter could be placed on the court roll.

He is said to be under investigation for possible contravention of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, relating to more than R1 million in “gratuities” he received from a Pretoria car dealer.

Phahlane was also present during the parliamentary briefing.
