Leaders of the ongoing protests in Alexandra township went ahead with plans to take their fight to the Sandton CBD on Monday.
Residents of the township are protesting what they feel is inadequate service delivery in the area, as well as the mushrooming of informal settlements.
A community meeting was held on Friday at the Sankopano Community Hall, where residents agreed to embark on a second total shutdown on Monday, after Johannesburg executive mayor Mashaba failed to respond to their grievances and said he would only meet with the people of Alex on Monday, April 15.
There are some reports that protesters are marching back to protest in Alexandra.
Earlier, protesters clashed with police as they blocked Grayston Drive.
This followed the protesting Alex residents arriving at the City of Johannesburg’s regional offices in Daisy Street, Sandton, where they had gathered to hand over a memorandum detailing their grievances and demands.
Major delays on Grayston Drive were reported on Monday morning by Alex News, with motorists urged to use alternative routes.
