Police Minister Bheki Cele was welcomed back into the arms of the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Friday during a special parade.
“Thanks for welcoming me, but I am also welcoming myself home,” Cele said.
“We are not at war with the public, we are at war with criminals,” he said.
He declared his love for South Africa, its residents and the police.
“If you want war, you will get war. If you want peace, you will find peace,” he warned.
“We must throw fear in their hearts, we are not going to share space with criminals. They must just try to get a space somewhere where we cannot reach them and they cannot reach us.”
During the parade, national commissioner General Khehla Sitole announced his succession plan wherein national deputy commissioners will be rotated to give a wider understanding of how the organisation worked.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are privileged to welcome a remarkable individual who has been in the forefront of fighting crime and has vast experience, such as implementing complex strategic and operational tactics that saw us take meaningful and progressive strides in the fight against crime during his tenure,” Sitole said.
“It was his distinct leadership that led to numerous successes. He will lead us into a new dawn aware of the criminal justice system dynamics and how we can improve the SAPS in all spheres.”
