Ramaphosa ‘plays it too safe’, says Makhosi Khoza

ANC MP and former chairperson of the portfolio committee on public service and administration Makhosi Khoza has criticised the DA’s call for an early election, also outlining what a true leader embodies.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Khoza said the DA’s call for an early election disregarded the will of the people who gave the ANC the constitutional mandate to govern the country for five years, further admitting the current leadership was not consistent with the mandate.

“We must never allow opportunism to creep in when we are genuinely confronting the challenges facing our country,” she said.

The DA’s call for early elections was the “worst form of opportunism”, as the party knew the ANC was at its “weakest”.

In fact, “its call for an early election confirms its desperation to return the white supremacist minority rule through the backdoor”, she added.

Khoza alleged the DA was still a home for “a new covert form of racism” that “paraded blackness in the front office and keeps white racism in the back office”.

She suggested a vote of no confidence in all ANC leaders who were “morally compromised” be passed, as the “rot” was deeper than President Jacob Zuma. Voting the ANC out of power was, however, not the solution, and was never going to happen, she said.

“The DA must never mistake our stand as ANC MPs as being against the ANC. We cannot vote the ANC out of power. We are voting corruption out of the affairs of RSA.

“Maybe we need an ANC-sponsored vote of no confidence in the president, after all. That way we keep the ANC in power for 5 years consistent with the wishes of the people. That will give the ANC time to clean up its mess and regain lost public confidence,” she said.

As bad as the current leader was, Khoza said there were moral and ethical leaders outside the ANC structures, who were victims of gatekeeping. The ruling party needed to get those back to the ANC, though she admitted it would be difficult.

“The current political environment needs courageous leaders with high moral stamina. We cannot afford to nurse people’s insecurities,” she said.

Responding to a follower who asked her if Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was an embodiment of the leadership she spoke of, Makhosi said “definitely not”.

“A moral and ethical leader is courageous and pursues truth even if it may be career limiting. I think he plays it too safe,” she said, adding she did not know his moral standing point.

Khoza, however, suspected there were still “monstrous skeletons” in the cupboard.

Ramaphosa recently made headlines after it emerged on Friday evening that Sunday Independent editor Steven Motale was in possession of numerous emails from his private email accounts possibly linking him to as many as eight different women.

The emails were either leaked from Ramaphosa’s server or were obtained through a hack. His office has said they were not obtained legally.

Ramaphosa’s office, through acting spokesperson Tyrone Seale, released a statement on Friday to say it was “aware” of social media messages, “which take the form of media enquiries from a Sunday newspaper, that make various claims about Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s personal life”.

He reportedly admitted to having an affair eight years ago but told his wife and then ended the affair.
