I had nothing to do with Madiba book, says Winnie

The late Nelson Mandela’s former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has denied claims that she gave permission for the publication of a book about the former stateman’s last years.

The book, written by Mandela’s doctor Vejay Ramlakan caused controversy after Mandela’s widow Graca Machel said she was considering suing the doctor for breaching patient-doctor confidentiality.

Ramlakan had told publishers Penguin Random House that he was given permission by the family to write the book.

The publishers have withdrawn the book from shelves following backlash from the family.

EWN reports that Madikizela-Mandela has distanced herself from the book.

“In terms of the autograph I gave to the author, this was a courtesy on my part for someone who had cared for Madiba. He brought me the first copy and he said: ‘Mama can you sign the first copy?’ I am asked for my autograph often, and my autograph has never become an endorsement of anything.

“With regard to statements made in the media by MK Malefane in relation to myself and this book, I cannot prevent anyone from making statements. Once again, I did not commission MK to say anything either on my behalf or anyone else.” she said.
