This after the court ruled that government’s decision to call for proposals for the procurement of 9.6 gigawatts of nuclear energy is unlawful and unconstitutional.
Western Cape High Court Judge Lee Bozalek ruled in favour of Earthlife Africa, which brought the case, that government had flouted due process by not first debating in Parliament its decision to procure 9.6 gigawatts of nuclear power.
Shivambu hailed the court, saying the judgment was proof that the court is the only institution that can “protect us from Kleptocracy”.
“Hooray: The Western Cape High Court found the Russia-SA Nuclear Deal worth trillions to be illegal & unconstitutional.
“It is clear that of the three organs of the State, only Courts will protect us from Kleptocracy. We need to rescue Parliament and Government and make them people’s organs for people’s power!”
The EFF also said in a statement that this is another reason why President Jacob Zuma must step down. The party said that this was the reason former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene was sack because he refused to sign the R1 trillion deal, citing that it is not affordable.
“It comes as no surprise that this deal was secured in secret as it was not about the m enhancement of the livelihoods of our people but a means to further the interests of a corrupt government under the leadership and state capture of the Gupta family.
“Nhlanhla Nene was removed as the Minister of Treasury in December 2015 because he had refused to comply with procuring the the nuclear deal. His replacement with Van Rooyen was all in an attempt to have this deal passed. This is the same with the removal of Pravin Gordhan. Gigaba has also been brought as an unquestioning mind towards the nuclear deal. His only interest in being Finance Minister is taking selfies with his friends and has nothing to do with uplifting the economic status of our country.
“This court ruling is a decisive victory for the country and the people of South Africa against Kleptocracy and lawlessness. It is yet another fundamental reason why Zuma must step down as the President of Republic; he has once more, presided over undermining the highest law in the land, all in pursuit of self-enrichment and corruption.”
