Sacked tourism minister Derek Hanekom has reportedly been redeployed to parliament (MP) as a member of the legislature’s finance portfolio committee.
Hanekom and former finance minister Pravin Gordhan made their debuts as ANC backbenchers in the National Assembly on Wednesday, a month after they were fired from Cabinet by President Jacob Zuma on March 30, News24 reported.
Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba was in the House answering questions along with other ministers who are part of the economic cluster. According to the news website, the pair left the proceedings after 40 minutes, and only Hanekom returned an hour-and-a-half later.
Hanekom on Thursday said he was “perfectly fine” with his placement to the finance committee. He would also act as an alternative on the appropriations committee, while Gordhan said his redeployment was “in the process”.
Four of their former colleagues who were also fired in the controversial reshuffle, but later resigned from parliament, include: Mcebisi Jonas, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, Dipuo Peters and Ngoako Ramatlhodi.
