Gunmen kill two Limpopo grannies

When a Limpopo grandmother opened the house door to let her daughter in after work on Sunday night, little did the old woman know she was opening the door to a hail of bullets that would send her to the grave.

The 62-year-old pensioner had spent the better part of her day in the house waiting for her daughter to return. She was mowed down in full view of her husband and daughter.

The woman cannot not be named as police investigations are at a sensitive stage.

According to police, the shooting, which sent shock waves through Limpopo, took place at about 8pm in Xikundu village, close to Malamulele in the Vhembe area.

Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the woman’s husband, 62, was injured when he tried shield her from the gunmen.

“During the incident her daughter was robbed of cash but, fortunately, she managed to escape unhurt,” said Ngoepe.

Despite this, Ngoepe said the motive behind the attack was unknown and police investigations were continuing. In a second incident, police have launched a manhunt after a 66-year-old woman was attacked and killed at Madalastand, near Zaaiplaas.

The woman was walking home after visiting her mother in-law when she was shot dead at about 8pm. Passers-by found her body in a pool of blood and alerted the police.

“When police arrived at the scene, the deceased’s body was covered in blood and [had] multiple injuries. “The lower lip of her mouth had been cut off with a sharp instrument,” said Ngoepe.
