SABC finds COO Chris Maroleng guilty

The SABC has reportedly found its chief operating officer Chris Maroleng guilty following a disciplinary hearing that was initiated late last year. Maroleng was reportedly facing charges of gross negligence and breach of fiduciary duty. The charges he was found guilty on reportedly qualified for a dismissal, though the broadcaster was still waiting on sanctions to be recommended by an independent disciplinary chairperson, City Press reported.
He reportedly approved a monthly acting allowance of R15,000 for an employee despite a human resources decision against it, among other charges. Maroleng allegedly also protected former acting group executive for sport Marcia Mahlalela, who resigned before facing a disciplinary hearing.
Maroleng’s lawyer Itayi Gwaunza told the publication that the disciplinary process had not yet been finalised and further said Maroleng and the SABC still had to make submissions on the sanction.
“Depending on the outcome, he will then decide on a way forward,” he was quoted as saying.
SABC spokesperson Vuyo Mthembu told the publication that the newly-appointed board would deal with the matter.
“The SABC will not discuss the details of the disciplinary hearing and has no further comment on this matter at this stage,” she said.
Maroleng has been the broadcaster’s COO for just over a year.
