Gender Commission ‘shocked’ by EFF chief whip’s alleged assault on female subordinate

The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) is “dismayed” after receiving “yet another shocking report of brutal gender-based violence against a woman who was allegedly assaulted by EFF chief whip in North West, Bunga Ntsangane”.

The incident was reported to CGE on Thursday, November 9, 2017, by EFF chairwoman in North West and another staff member who allegedly witnessed a violent assault and verbal abuse on a junior staff member by Ntsangane.

The commission believes in a country where 170 616 women suffered grievous bodily harm and 156 450 suffered common assault, as per the latest South African Police Services (SAPS) statistics, Ntsangane’s actions deserve to be condemned in the strongest terms.

“This is especially reprehensible and inexcusable coming on the eve of 16 Days of Activism against No Violence against Women and Children wherein the Commission and like-minded institutions are focusing on greater efforts in ending violence Against Women and Children,” said commission spokesperson Jabu Baloyi

 Baloyi added the commission also condemned all forms of violence irrespective of race, creed, class etc.

“The CGE is extremely disappointed that someone who has pledged allegiance to the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa goes against everything that he agreed to abide by. The Commission therefore is calling for the suspension of Chief Whip Ntsangane from all duties pending the outcome of the investigation in the matter,” Baloyi said in a press statement.
