The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) says the #MenAreTrash campaign will divide men and women instead of “seeking a way to work together”.
#MenAreTrash was introduced after the murder of Karabo Mokoena, allegedly by her boyfriend.
Marlise Richter, policy development and advocacy unit manager at Sonke Gender Justice, said Mokoena’s killing, the recent sentencing of Patrick Wisani who murdered his girlfriend and #MenAreTrash have highlighted the crisis of gender-based violence in South Africa.
“Sonke Gender Justice and its partners have been calling for a national strategic plan to address gender-based violence for years. We urgently need to roll out more primary prevention interventions which address the harmful gender norms and violent masculinities that we know drive gender-based violence.”
