The Gauteng government’s online application system for grade 1 and 8 pupils will open on Monday.
It closes at midnight on May 28 and parents are urged to register their children as soon as possible.
Parents must go to www.gdeadmissions.gov.za to apply. It’s advised to use Google Chrome, as it’s faster than other search engines, the department said.
A parent can apply for a maximum of five schools per pupil.
Those applying for grade 8 have the option to indicate which school the child is currently attending to facilitate identifying high schools closest to the pupil’s current primary school.
An application using home address, parents’ work address or indicating there is a sibling at the school applied for will be made a high priority, referred to as List A or WA, so as to place pupils in schools closest to where they live.
“However, using the school of choice option, the applicant will be placed on waiting List B or WB.
“This means the applicant lives or works outside the feeder zone,” said the department.
Parents could apply to any of the schools with a focus on specialised talent. However, admission to such schools requires that would-be pupils write an aptitude test or do other pre-selection tests.
Any parent who does not have access to the internet or requires face-to-face assistance should visit one of the decentralised application centres or a community library.
There will be 65 admission centres across the 15 education districts.
