Garden Route SPCA to open animal education centre

The recently completed Animal Education Centre building on the premises of the Garden Route SPCA will be opening soon, SPCA volunteer Wendy Jones told George Herald.

Head of the education unit, SPCA inspector Gerda Reynders, said: “At this stage, the empty building signifies the passion of the SPCA to promote the prevention of cruelty to animals by inviting children and community groups to the centre for fun and informative get-togethers.

“We envisage informal, enjoyable sessions with children from local schools and adult groups, where they will be offered creative activities that reinforce the basic principles of correct animal care.”

A grant from the Lotto accounted for a third of the money needed to build the centre and the balance was obtained through bequests and the tireless effort of staff and volunteers, who held various fundraisers.

The centre already has a brand new phone and table donated by Ellen Allpass, and Jannie Kruger of MiniMix has donated large concrete blocks to cover the ground around the buildings.

Monetary donations may be made into the Standard Bank account. Name: Garden Route SPCA, Branch: George, Code: 050214, Account No: 302 781 439. Please use “Education Centre” and your name as the reference.

If you have any items the education team can use, such as desks, tables, chairs, children’s games, cupboards, carpets, or shelves, please contact the SPCA office on 044 878 1990. Donations may be brought to the SPCA office in Ossie Urban Street, Tamsui Industria, where the new building is situated.
