Four people were killed and 11 others injured in a head-on collision on the R72 between Gulu and Kidds Beach near East London on Tuesday evening.
Eastern Cape traffic spokesperson Charles Bramwell said it was alleged that a Nissan LDV long wheel base and an Izuzu double cab were both involved in the fatal crash. Bramwell said the Izuzu was travelling in the direction of Port Elizabeth while the Nissan was traveling in the direction of Kidds Beach near East London.
Bramwell said the the driver of the Izuzu allegedly overtook two vehicles, in the face of oncoming traffic, and collided head-on with the Nissan.
Following the collision, Bramwell said the Izuzu landed 15 meters down an embankment. Four men died as a result of the crash, including both drivers.
Six people were critically injured, while five others sutained slight injuries.
Bramwell said the road was closed for almost four hours and the jaws of life had to be used to remove the deceased drivers from both vehicles.
