Five assault cases against man banned from Spur – report

The man who made headlines after a video of an angry exchange with another parent in a Spur restaurant in March was published on social media allegedly had five assault cases against him, four of which were withdrawn.

The man was reportedly found not guilty on one of the remaining of the five cases, which was a common assault charge.

This is according to a report by News24, which found that the cases against the man range from June 2005 to November 2011. The news website reports that one of the alleged cases included a public assault of his wife at a rugby club but attempts to obtain comment from the man were unsuccessful.

The man’s alleged “track record of violent behaviour” was, according to AfriForum spokesperson Ernst Roets on Sunday to News24, “irrelevant” to the outcome of the incident at Spur, which saw the franchise ban the man from all of their restaurants nationally. The franchise further apologised to the woman, saying that the CCTV footage showed her version of events was correct – a decision which was met with backlash with some starting a “Boycott/Boikot SPUR Steak Ranches” Facebook page.

AfriForum has described the matter as being handled in a “one-sided” way and they do not believe Spur dealt with the situation appropriately by banning one person and apologising to the other when both the man and woman had “behaved poorly”.

AfriDorum further explained to News24 that the Afrikaner community was “tired of being used as ‘political punching bags'” the report said.

Spur further apologised about how the incident was handled in a statement issued last week.
