Fireworks expected in parliament as MPs debate Zuma’s Sona

Following last week’s State of the Nation Address (Sona), which was marred by fisticuffs and heckling that turned the National Assembly into a spectacle, political parties represented in parliament will get a chance to debate President Jacob Zuma’s address to the nation for two days.

The EFF, who were violently ejected from parliament by security in white shirts, are expected to miss the debate as they were automatically suspended for five working days for the brawls in the house.

Although the DA staged a walked in solidarity with the red berets, the official opposition will be present for the debate. Cope will also participate despite its MP Willie Madisha being removed from parliament.

The debate will take place during the joint sitting of MPs from the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces on Tuesday and Wednesday with Zuma expected to only give his response to MPs criticisms on Thursday.

His speech largely focused on land reform, radical economic transformation, corruption and higher education.

The debate is expected to begin at 2pm.
