Fellow South Africans, I’m under attack, says Malema

It seems hackers are now after EFF leader Julius Malema and former ANC MP Vytjie Mentor, as the two have recently complained about being unable to retrieve their emails.

The EFF leader shared a screenshot of a message from Gmail saying it suspected that government-backed attackers may have been trying to steal his password.

“Government-backed attackers may be trying to steal your password. There’s a chance this is a false alarm, but we believe we detected government-backed attackers trying to steal your password. This happens to less than 0.1% of all Gmail users.

“We can’t reveal what tipped us off because the attackers will take note and change their tactics, but if they are successful at some point, they could access your data or take other actions using your account. To further improve your security based on your current settings we recommend; enable two-factor authentication and set up a security key,” reads the message.

Malema said that he was being attacked by a “kleptocratic state”.

“Fellow South Africans, I’m under attack from a kleptocratic state. I can’t even retrieve my emails because they are trying to hack my account,” he said.

This after hackers tried to take control of his Twitter account recently.

The EFF leader told News24 that the hackers’ work would be in vain since he had nothing to hide.

“We have been accused of being CIA spies, but there is no evidence of this. We are under constant illegal investigation and we can’t do anything about it. They are tampering with our phones and our cellphones too,” he was quoted as saying.

While some of his followers sympathised with him, some said he put himself in this “mess” by putting President Jacob Zuma in power.

“So what are we to do now? Provide solution?” asked one.

His backers said people should move on from Malema’s history in the ANC, as he had, but they were met with more anger.

“We’ll get over that when Zuma is removed and the country has recovered from all damage done by Zuma. Malema had big part to play in this mess,” they argued.

Another public figure who seems to be a target is Mentor, who also took to social media to complain that her account had been down for some time now.

“My email server has been down for days now. I have become used to this,” she said.

Her followers urged her to have it checked to ensure that her account remains safe.
