Fatal incident claims the lives of two PetroSA employees

PetroSA acting group CEO Kholly Zono said in a media statement on Wednesday morning that PetroSA employees were traumatised by the fatal incident that claimed the lives of a mechanical fitter and an operator on Tuesday afternoon at the Gas to Liquid Refinery in Mossel Bay, reports the Mossel Bay Advertiser.

Two employees, Sheradon Baker and Luvuyo Mkutukana, died at about 4.20pm on Tuesday.

As far as could be ascertained, the two men were overcome by toxic gases when working on a vessel at the Mossel Bay plant.

According to the PetroSA group communications manager Thabo Mabaso, the necessary emergency measures were activated immediately upon the discovery of the incident and PetroSA emergency personnel tried their very best to resuscitate the injured men, but to no avail.

“Their next-of-kin have been informed, and PetroSA is providing support and counselling services,” Mabaso said.

“Safety and security is sacrosanct at PetroSA, and we will provide our full cooperation to investigators who will conduct an inquiry into the incident. Our human resources department has been in contact with the families, and we will provide whatever support may be deemed necessary.”

They lost consciousness and, despite PetroSA’s emergency medical treatment, they were declared dead on site at about 6.20pm.
