In contrast to the freezing cold conditions that have been experienced in most parts of the country in recent days, slight improvements in daytime temperatures are on the cards for this week, the South African Weather Service said yesterday.
The cold conditions which saw minimum temperatures slipping below the 0°C mark while maximums at some point only peaked at around 10°C last week, were as a result of a strong cold front.
Speaking to The Citizen yesterday, forecaster Lulama Menze said while residents in the Limpopo Lowveld could expect warmer conditions today, those in the southwestern parts should brace themselves for cooler conditions. “Elsewhere in Mpumalanga, those in the Lowveld and the escarpment areas can expect warmer conditions and cool for the Highveld,” Menze said.
In Gauteng, although the weather was expected to slightly improve, daytime temperatures were set to remain in the cool category today, he added. Minimums in Vereeniging were expected to improve to 2°C before peaking at highs of 22°C today.
In Johannesburg and Pretoria, minimum temperatures were expected to be between 5 and 7°C, while maximums were set to range between 22 and 23°C.
Residents in the Eastern Cape, could expect cool to warm conditions in the northern and interior parts of the province today, but cold in higher areas.
Similar conditions were expected in the Western Cape for the better part of this week. Menze said there had been no alerts for bad weather issued for the Western Cape or the Eastern Cape.
Meanwhile, rain in the Western Cape is still needed following the drought, which has seen the levels of major dams in the province plunge below the 20% capacity mark.
Western Province usually receives most of its rain during winter.
