Expect more rainfall over the weekend – SA Weather Service

The chances of rain in Gauteng are expected to increase to 80% on Friday, the South African Weather Service said on Thursday.

It started raining on Wednesday, increasing in several parts of the province on Thursday.

Forecaster Puseletso Mofokeng said there was an 80% chance of showers and thundershowers in the southern parts of the province while the northern parts, which includes Pretoria and surrounding areas, had a 60% chance.

From the weekend, the chance of rain drops to 30%.

Heavy downpours are expected to continue over the eastern parts of Limpopo, which includes Lephalale and Bela Bela, as well as over the southwestern parts of Mpumalanga today, going into the weekend.

In North West, there is an 80% chance of showers and thundershowers in the eastern parts of the province and between 30% and 60% elsewhere.

The Free State has between a 30% and 60% chance of rain.

In KwaZulu-Natal, according to Mofokeng, there is a 60% chance of rain over the eastern half of the province, while rain is more likely to fall along the south coast, where the probability is between 80% and 100%.

In the Western Cape, which has been gripped by dry and hot weather conditions, rain is also expected.

Daytime temperatures at some stage in recent weeks peaked at scorching highs of around 40ºC.

Meanwhile, despite there being no flood alerts or warnings issued as yet for Gauteng and other parts of the country, people are again urged to remain on high alert.
