Durban to join annual global clean-up effort

The initiative, which has run for over two decades, forms part of an international effort to collect and document the rubbish littering the world’s coastlines.

A nationwide coastal cleanup is planned from September 16 to 21 as Clean up and Recycle host their annual campaign, which aims to cover as much of the coastal regions, offshore islands and waterways of South Africa, reports Northglen News.

The initiative, which has run for over two decades, forms part of an international effort to collect and document the rubbish littering the world’s coastlines. Durban cleanups will take place in various coastal areas including uShaka Beach, Wilson’s Wharf, Virginia Beach and Beachwood Mangroves.

Local environmental organisations, including #CleanBlueLagoon and Waste Action Tribe will be hosting various cleanups, each taking charge of a certain area.

The KZN coordinator for the cleanup is founder of Waste Action Tribe Lindsay Hopkins.

“This is a quality, not quantity cleanup, recording what is collected is crucial. We do this once a year. Companies are encouraged to visit the website and register for the cleanup as we will need to ensure that each cleaner has a form to fill in. The form will record what items are picked up and this will go into the big national database for research purposes,” said Hopkins.

Individuals who want to join in can also register online. The week of cleaning will culminate on Saturday, September 21.
