ANC head of elections Fikile Mbalula briefed the media on Tuesday on the conclusion of the registration process for this year’s elections. The window for registration closed this past weekend.
Mbalula did not restrict himself to the topic of elections, however, and took the opportunity to give the official opposition a tongue lashing.
“The ANC has noted that the Democratic Alliance has elected to run a negative campaign devoid of policy content, driven by disinformation and innuendo,” he said.
“We have no doubt that this is a sideshow to distract voters from the implosion currently unfolding in the DA”.
Mbalula then brought up the recent resignation of former DA head of policy Gwen Ngwenya.
“The resignation of their head of policy confirms the criticism that black people are merely political faces with no power inside the Democratic Alliance,” he said.

“This is a view confirmed in her letter of resignation stating that she will no longer be the face of policy,” he continued.
Mbalula also didn’t miss a chance to take Cape Town premier Helen Zille to task over her controversial recent call for a tax revolt.
Zille recently took to Twitter to propose a tax revolt if those implicated at the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture were not prosecuted in a “reasonable amount of time”.
According to Mbalula, Zille “not only violated her oath of office by calling for a tax boycott if the ANC returns to office”, but showed “the levels of desperation the DA is prepared to stoop to”.
“Helen Zille is instigating South Africans to break the law and violate the constitution if voters don’t favour them at the polls,” he continued.
“This is a subversion of democracy that exposes the hypocrisy of the DA in their pronouncements in respect of the constitution.”
Zille has not backed down from her call for a revolt despite the DA stating it was not party policy, calling the backlash to it “hysterical“.
