The Electoral Commission of South Africa’s (IEC) election results screens are back up after a technical glitch on Friday morning.
The dashboard and election results screens crashed at the IEC’s national results and operations centre (ROC) at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.
It is understood the glitch also spilled over to the IEC provisional results centres, its website and even the mobile app.
The outage left political parties and journalists scurrying to get realtime updates as the counting process draws to a close.
The IEC said it experienced an interruption in the replication of data from its national data centre and the various results operation centres.
“The data in the data centre remains intact and the results have not been compromised. All services have since been restored and the leaderboard is working normal. Result processing continues unaffected.”
Earlier, the IEC said it is working to resolve the outage which was caused by a what it called an issue with the “beaming system”.
“We apologise for the issue with our public facing NPE system, and are working on restoring service. The results system is still operational and local offices continue to capture results.”
The IEC also experienced a myriad glitches at polling stations across the country on election day. Despite the problems, voters took it largely in good spirit and were reminded of those joyous times, 30 years ago, when all people were given the opportunity to vote for the first time.

Meanwhile, the IEC on Thursday confirmed that it lost one ballot box in KwaZulu-Natal during transportation.
IEC general manager Granville Abrahams on Thursday said it lost the ballot box in uMhlathuze.
Abrahams said the box was being transported in an open vehicle and when it got to storage, it was missing.
“The Electoral Commission appeals to citizens in and around Ward 14 uMhlathuze, in KwaZulu-Natal, to be on the lookout for an IEC branded ballot box that went missing in transit from the voting station Matamzana Dube School to the municipal electoral office for storage.”
The IEC appealed to anyone who finds the ballot box to return it to the commission.
