ANC has ‘stepped into the shoes of the oppressor’ – Mpofu

The EFF national chairperson claims the ruling party boasts about building a million houses without caring about their quality.

At a pre-election public debate hosted by the University of South Africa (Unisa), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) national chairperson Dali Mpofu gave an introduction ahead of the debate which the party’s Twitter account – perhaps somewhat optimistically – referred to as an indication of “what the EFF will do when it takes over government in May”.

Mpofu began by saying that South Africa’s “problem is that we refuse to diagnose the problem”.

“The problems started 367 years ago, when the land of the black African majority was taken through violence,” he continued.

“The reason why the colonialists took our land is because they understood that to build an economy, you need to have ownership of the land.

Mpofu then went into his belief that the land problem couldn’t be resolved through the free market, accusing the “white minority” of only extolling the virtues of the free market when it suits them.

“Now you are told that the free market system must resolve this problem. When it suited the white minority, why didn’t they trust the free market system? Instead they used the power of the state to achieve social engineering,” he said.

The last part of Mpofu’s introduction called for revolution and pointed fingers at the ANC for, in his opinion, becoming like “the oppressor”.

“We need a revolution. We must unlearn the paradigm. The problem with the so-called liberators is that they step into the shoes of the oppressor and continue where they left off,” he said.

“For example, the ANC says we have built one million houses, but no one speaks of the quality of those houses,” he continued.

“No one speaks of how many squatter camps have mushroomed in that area and how many of these houses have been sold by the people, opting to remain in the shack rather than to go hungry,” Mpofu said.
