Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has come out in defence of his deputy Floyd Shivambu, after allegations that he received R10 million from VBS Bank in what has been described as ‘The Great Bank Heist’.

On Friday morning, journalist Richard Poplak asked the party on Twitter if it would suspend Shivambu pending an investigation into the allegations.

Malema responded by saying: “We won’t do it, you can forget about that.”

On Thursday night Malema tweeted that he would be meeting with “the man of the moment” (Floyd Shivambu) and that the “enemy” was attacking the party.

Shivambu became embroiled in scandal after a report commissioned by Treasury looking into the “looting” of VBS Bank named Floyd Shivambu’s brother Brian as having received R16 million.

Then, a Daily Maverick report alleged that Shivambu himself may have received as much as R10 million, and that the party may have received R1.3 million.
