Following recent gang violence in schools in Orange Farm, MEC for Education in Gauteng, Matome Chiloane, has called for urgent community intervention.
Last Friday, 11 April, there was a stabbing incident at Thetha Secondary School, reportedly involving a student and a known gang member. As an act of retaliation, on Monday, the gang members allegedly targeted the same pupil.

Gang violence
According to the department, a similar incident involving four pupils was reported on Wednesday at Vulanindlela Secondary School.
“A Grade 11 learner was unfortunately stabbed and rushed to the clinic, while the Grade 10 perpetrator was apprehended by school patrollers and is currently in police custody,” it said.
There were no reported fatalities in the incidents.
The department expressed grave concern over the impact of the violence on schooling and the well-being of students.
“Due to the heightened tensions and ongoing safety concerns, schooling has been disrupted not only at Thetha Secondary but also at nearby primary schools,” stated the department.

Swift action from authorities
In response, the Gauteng Department of Education, in collaboration with the South African Police Service (Saps), has deployed regular patrols in the affected areas and launched search operations at both schools.
Psychosocial support teams have also been sent to provide assistance to traumatised students and staff.
“Learners are encouraged to return to school as police have committed to patrolling their schools,” the department stated.
According to the department, the school governing bodies (SGBs) at both institutions will suspend the implicated students and initiate disciplinary processes.

Safe spaces
Chiloane further stressed that any students involved in gang-related activity will face immediate suspension and formal disciplinary action.
“We unequivocally condemn all acts of violence and gang-related activity on and around school premises. We are committed to ensuring that our schools remain safe spaces for learning and development,” he said.
The MEC also urged parents, guardians, and local residents to play an active role in maintaining discipline and supporting safety initiatives.
“We call on all parents, guardians, and community members to work with the department to instil discipline and support efforts to protect the future of our learners. Our learners deserve an environment free from fear and violence,” said Chiloane.
