The African National Congress (ANC) leadership in the Eastern Cape has called on the governing party’s national officials to “fast track” Jacob Zuma’s removal from office as the country’s state president.
“The national officials must fast track this process. There have been calls by South Africans for the necessity to change the state president. And this comes from a variety of structures,” provincial secretary Lulama Ngcukaitobi said on Monday following a two-day meeting of the provincial executive committee (PEC), The Sowetan reported.
“The ANC officials must consider these views from these sectors and respond accordingly.”
Earlier this month, the ANC’s highest decision-making body, the national executive committee (NEC), took a decision that its top six officials — ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa, his deputy, David Mabuza, secretary-general Ace Magashule, his deputy Jesse Duarte, chairperson Gwede Mantashe and provincial chairperson Paul Mashatile — should manage Zuma’s exit from the Union Buildings.
However, public comments by Magashule and Duarte at the weekend in support of Zuma completing his second term appear to show that the leaders are divided on the issue.
